Strange question for these forums, but one I do not know the answer to!

My mom's factory unit in her van died (not blown fuses), but compeltely died.
Just need something cheap.

Who makes the best head units in the <$150 range? Alpine?

Not a strange question at all.  For a new head unit under $150 look for a Blaupunkt.  The Monte Carlo can be had for around $125 and it is a very nice sounding HU.  If you can find an Alpine for less than $150 it would be a good deal.  Some of the lower-end Pioneers and Kenwoods can be had for that price too.  Avoid anything from Lanzar, Pyle, Boss, Dual, Sony, JVC, Sanyo, Jensen, American Pro, Road Gear, Audiovox, Legacy, or any of the flea-market brands.

Thanks. Just what I figured! I never had any experience with Blaupunkt but I saw they had some fairly nice looking units.

I am used to Alpine, MB Quart, Eclipse, etc not exactly the "cheap stuff" :)

Alpine's CDE-9841 or CDE-9843 can be had for $150 or less.
There is no such thing as free installation!

yea i would definitely go with Alpine.  i don't personally own a Alpine HU's but i know people who do.  they have absolutely no complaints.  tcss is right.  those HU's are under $150.  the Pioneer DEH-P3700MP is another HU that i have heard nothing but good things about.  it costs $149.99 so it is still in the price range.
That's my opinion. Take it, leave it, or correct me.

I picked up the alpine 9841

Just seemed better quality than the other brands in that range.

I have a $300 HU by Alpine in my Mustang and love it.
