Hi everyone,
I am trying to install the Compustar 2W900FM-AS alarm/remote start on my gf's '91 civic hatchback. I have been working on cars for a while now so I'd like to think I'm somewhat mechanically inclined, but an alarm/remote start is something new for me.
I have a few (stupid?) questions that would really help out.
This is a brand new unit with the remote start functionality (main reason it is being installed). It has never been programmed.
We first wanted to hook everything up minus the remote starter just to make sure we were on the right track. We hooked up the siren, hood pin, brakes, door unlock/lock, shock sensor, power, ground, but did not hook up the ignition and starter.
We attempted to power it up to see if we could get the doors to lock and unlock. The pager/remote does not detect a signal from the antenna (shows no bars at all). I tested the harness going into the antenna and it IS getting full power.
Q1: Is this simply because the remotes haven't been programmed yet? Judging by the programming sequence, the ignition (at a bare minimum) needs to be hooked up. Is this the case? I assumed I should atleast get some reception/signal from the antenna if they're not programmed. If the remotes do not need to be programmed in order to receive a signal, any idea what could be wrong?
In regards to the remote start, I am a bit confused regarding the wiring. Pin 7 on CN1 is for the Ignition and is labeled as being GREEN/ red. However, on the actual harness there are 2 wires coming out of this pin, a green and a red (after reading the wiring manual posted on this site, it says this wire at pin 7 is green??). Why are there two? In the vehicle wiring here, it says the ignition is BLACK / YELLOW and located in the ignition harness. In the ignition harness, there is a wire that is BLACK / YELLOW but there is also a black and a yellow wire.
Q2: How does this wire up? Why are there 2 wires from the compustar harness? Does the green wire from the harness tap into the BLACK / YELLOW wire in the ignition harness then the red to power? I'm confused here...
This vehicle was originally manual door locks. I converted it to power about a year ago so I still have all the actuators hooked up and the wiring ran. The 'brain' for the keyless entry was a ghetto Bulldog Security 'alarm' (did not hook it up, just used the keyless entry function).
Q3: Will the lock/unlock output from the compustar brain work in the same manner as the bulldog one did in regards to locking/unlocking the door?
Q4: There are wires on the compustar for 'door trigger' and this is also listed on the wiring information. Since this car was originally manual locks, are there still door triggers? I am assuming yes, but would like to verify.
Q5: In the wiring information, it lists 'accessory' as being on the ignition harness. Does this hook up to 'accessory' on the CN1 harness on the compustar? Reading the wiring manual, this is for the blower motor for the heater or a/c. Is this necessary? Can you not just leave the controls on in the car so it starts automatically when the car remote starts? Or is this needed to supply power to the motor?
Q6: In the wiring information, it says "Steering Column, use Relay" in regards to the wire for the horn. Can someone elaborate on what you need the relay for please?
Q7: There is no 'dome light supervision' listed on the wiring information, any idea how to go about doing this one?
Any and all help is greately appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Thanks again,
Chris

a1-   yes you need to program the remote to the main unit. follow the instructions in the manual. it will not receive any signal at all until paired up.
a2- the RED / gree combo is for the igntion kill relay i believe, if u choose to use that method.. check the file downloads in the section under compustar 3000 (something like that) it will tell u hoe ot use the ignition kill relay. if you dont want that... just use the green wire and connect to yoru cars ignition wire.
a3- not sure how the bulldog system works but for locking and unlocking the unit send a -250mv signal.. depending on your car you may need a relay (eg in my car i had to add a 1k resistor inline for the locking.. and for unlocking i had to wire a relay to fully ground the unlock).
a4- check you car wiring for a door trigger wire.. if your car dings when the door it open, it has a door trigger wire.
a5- "accesory" from CN1 (the one with the big 8 pin connector.. this wire (white i think) goes to the ACC wire on your cars ignition harness (near the IGN wire somewhere) it does not connect to the other accesory wire from the compustar unit.. that other wire is if u need to wire a relay to allow you to use a 2nd acc wire if u need it. i didnt
a6- dunno i didnt install a horn wire.. but id guess u take the horn wire from the compustar.. hook it up to pin 85 on a relay, fused 12v to the 86 pin, 87 pin to ground, 30 to car horn wire.. thats just a guess assuming your car needs a ground to activate the horn.. it may need a 12v that instead in which case you would add a 12v wire to 87 instead of a ground... (meaning you will have a 12v connected at 86 and 87)
a7- i didnt do a domelite

Thank you for the reply irfan
a1: that's what I was hoping, thanks!
a2: there are 2 pdf's for that in the downloads. the install manual and the wiring manual. i can't seem to find anything regarding this in either. the only thing that comes close is in regards to the starter, not the ignition. any ideas?
a3: i'll have to look into this further, thanks!
a4: the car doesn't make any sounds when you open the door, however the dome light does turn on when the door is opened. could this be the door trigger too?
a5: thanks!
a6: i just found this actually in another thread. sounds the same pretty much, hopefully it works. thanks!
a7: no problem, thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to reply!
If anyone else has any suggestions/comments/answers, please feel free to post them.
Thanks,
Chris

hey sry i cut the relays out of my system so i dont knwo how they are connected. with a kill switch i woudl think that you would install the relay inline meaning you cut the ignition wire/or starter wire.. then connect the key side to the proper wire on the relay (87a maybe) and the side that goes to the cars starter (the REAL starter, in the engine bay) to the 30pin.. and 12v to 86 , and the starter kill wire to 86. id guess when u activate the starter kill, the remotestart unit sends a signal to pin 86, which closes the 87-30 relay (nothing) and opens the 87a-30 link (normally closed .. meaning the signal usually goes straight thru unless the relay has been activated).. im kinda tires so i may have something backwards..

Thanks for the reply irfan.

I understand in regards to the starter with the relay, I am not confused about that.

What I'm confused about is in the documents, the CN1 harness, pin7 is for the ignition and is listed as green.  However the harness that plugs in to CN1 on the brain actually has two wires coming out of this location with NO relay attached (unless I'm really confused??).  One wire is red, one wire is green.  I am not clear on how this is supposed to hook up for the ignition.

Thanks,

Chris
