Ok I was wondering if anyone could help me with this because I've tried getting help from an electronics store (Fry's Electronics) and they told me it can't be done but I don't believe them. All I want to do is extend this ribbon cable that connects my lcd screen and the push buttons about 3 inches. How can I do this? Or what can I use as a substitute for the ribbon cable? Please let me know what you would do. Thanks.
LCD Screen is a Pioneer AVD-w6200

check out a computer store, they've got ribbon cables that might help.  it looks like you can take hotse connectors apart (same as a computer one) then as long as all the wires go straight and none connect anywhere in the line, just cut the computer cable to the width you need and length and reassemble the end clips and give it a shot.  and anything is possible if ya have the money and time  Pioneer AVD-w6200, extend ribbon cable? -- posted image.

I would go back to Frys, as I recall they have the material to make your own cable.  At least they used to?

Make your own cable? Have any links or pics of what you are talking about?

i would suggest just soldering thin wires, looks like 14 wires to where the connector is and connecting them to the other connector where the buttons are. ive done this in the past with way more wires, doesnt take that long and works like a charm, only thing is you cant disconnect the connection. only other option i found is going to a surplus electronics store and finding a similar cable off another device.

hi,

get a steel rule, metric and standard.  use it to measure the pitch (center-to-center spacing of conductors).  with that, number of conductors, and length needed, search at digi-key or mouser for flat flex cable.  both show many different variations,  i'd bet you could find something from either of those suppliers.  hope this helps.
