I'm about to buy a remote start/alarm for my gf for christmas.  I've always preferred dei but I've heard some good things about compustar, especially good range.  I have no complaints about the viper 550esp I have in my truck.  I'm looking at the viper 560xv...the 791xv....or computer.  My only concerns are, with the 791, would the LCD be durable?  And, is compustar a decent brand as far as durability/reliability?  I think I'm going to stick with the 560xv because I'm buying off ebay, and if the compustar feels like junk, or the 791 remote seems like junk, it'd be a pain to return.  Thanks for any input

One more question, the website says that the 791 has an FSK antenna, what's the mean?  I'm assuming it's better than the XHF antenna...true?

the FSK is an XHF Plus FM antenna, as opposed to the ASK AM antenna some new models come with....  really, you cant go wrong with DEI, Compu or Astro.... just do your own research and chose the one YOU prefer.. they are all very good quality products.....

It's a matter of preference and if your worried about returns for either one, your out of luck unless it's installed and purchased from an authorized dealer. Just becareful about this if your purchasing from eBay because warranty will be only from the seller and most of the time it's just some basement seller telling you they have this glorious shop with tech support and they will promise you the world, until you need warranty.

As far as the durability of the 791 transmitter, it not that bad you just can't drop it too many times.  I've sold many a customer replacement transmitters becuase they dropped it or something along those lines and now it doesn't work.

I'm a dealer for both DEI and Compustar and I find that both have their good points, but lately I prefer the Compustar. I have found that the Viper 791 has had some range issues as well as remote issues. The remotes on the 791, the LCD and the Companion, have poor solder joints and tend to stop working. I've sent back more than I care to admit.  I like the feel of the Compustar remotes better than the DEI. Another issue with the 791 is jump starting the vehicle can damage the antenna. The Viper 560 has been the old reliable one, but don't rule out the Compustar. Do your research and see what one fits your needs. And as Velocity Motors said don't mess with ebay. Have and an authorized dealer do the install. Saving a few bucks will cost you more in the end.
