I have installed an Alpine 7998R headunit into an S Class Mercedes car. The head unit has a phantom face which electrically appears and disappears. The head unit hits the Mercedes gear stick each time when it is in the park position. Alpine used to do a slanting kit to make the unit avoid the gearstick but this has been withdrawn.

Any solutions?

What are you using for an installation kit now ? Is it a ISO DIN mounting size or is it larger than that for the Mercedes ? If it's larger, then you can probably fabricate your own installation kit and have it mount deeper into the dash. YOu will need patience and the proper materials to do this. ABS plastic sheet, metal strapping, and "L" brackets.

The mounting is a standard DIN mounting. One of the issues is that the phantom face, when extended out of the dash covers an area bigger than the DIN faceplate area. Thus it is not going to be possible to sink the unit further back into the centre dash.

I have a 7897 in my car and have sold several of them. I have seen some problems with them if the motors are interfered with during the opening/closing process. I like the 7998, but it sounds like unless you can cut the plastic inside the dash and sink it in you might want to go with another unit like the 7894.
