hey gang i have been wondering, i have a friend who says he wants to install horns in the front of his car : Image Dynamics CD-2 COMP along with 2 8" for midbass in the front to support 2 15" xxx in the back of the cherokee. Are these horns a good choice for car audio, I have no experience with these so am asking the knowledgeable in this forum.

It will give you a "Real" live sound.

Don't waste your time OR money, unless you plan to EQ the living daylights out of the front stage.....if done incorrectly.....youll never hear anything so awfull in your life. On the flip side.....if set up correctly and EQ'd, sweetest sound you ever heard.

As one who has HEARD good (and VERY EXPENSIVE) horns in the house AND car, I second the opinion of KarTuneMan. Without LOTS of time and eqipment to set them up VERY correctly (translation: this'll be expensive) "don't waste your time OR money"... Bingo. Certainly NOT the sweetest sound I have ever heard, but good... WHEN PROPERLY SET-UP!

And I cant tell what a "Real" live sound means... You don't need horns to get good sound, I guarantee it, and I will generally steer people AWAY from horns.

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

I will chime in as a third. Horns are great IF you are willing to apend the money and more importantly the TIME to set them up properly. Don't even thing about it without at the very least a 5 band fully parametric EQ per channel. You can also do it nicely with a 31 band 1/3 octave graphic. Also, positioning and aiming is absolutely crucial. I had HLCD's in my last 2 vehicles..... loved them. Closest thing to driving a full out PA rig in my car as I could possibly hope for (I mix live music.......), and was a LOT of work to do.

Christ you guys I just answered his question,I didn't fill him in on the real expense of all the processing required in an automobile.If you don't know what real live sound is,then go to a concert and look over the pa system.It sure as hell isn't conventional mids and tweeters.Or check out any DJ system.A Live sound is unique sounding not always the best mind you.I have worked settng up the PA system at about 13 concerts and worked security at these venues.The sound you hear there isn't the overcompressed sweetened up mixes you hear on your LP's or CD's.That is what live sound is.Is it needed in a car?More than 1/2 the stuff we jam in our auto's isn't but to each his own.God bless America, Russ

OOOOOH, OK. So ""Real" live sound" means peaky, hashy, nasty, "horn sounding"... To demonstrate "HORN SOUNDING", cup your hands around your mouth while speaking... do it AS you are talking, and listen to the character of your voice change.

Voila! Horns! LOL

OK. A slight exaggeration, but you get the idea. This is what improperly tuned horns do to music.

Calm down Russ... we just answered his question too! It just happens we went a little further than you did. That does not mean you were wrong in ANY respect...
