I have a 96 chevrolet monte carlo and I just got a new radar detector, and it needs to be plugged in to the ciggarete lighter to be on, so I was thinking if I can just cut my power wire from the radar detector and tap into the wires behind hte cigarrete lighter or to any other wires that would only turn on the radar detctor when the ignition is on. How would I know which is pos. and which is neg. on teh power wire form the RD and from teh car? Can you help me please.

Take the cigarette plug apart. Look to see which wire is connected to the center contact. That is the positive lead. The other that is attached to side contacts is the ground

Remember your cig lighter is on all the time, I believe the orange wire is hot , the blk is ground,********make sure you connect the right wire from the radar detector ,so you are not hooking the ground from that into a hot  line, use a DMM or test light , rule of thumb is  blac with a stripe is hot , plain black is ground

Thank you for your fast response. Another thing, if I cut the power wire from the radar detector, would it have two wires inside? sorry I have never done this. Also I noticed that my cigarrete lighter is on all of the time, so maybe I should just tap into something else, any ideas?
