Firstly, "Hi" everyone (first post)

I bought some 6" neon tubes for my car and they came in a kit, with a box that housed the on/off switch, and the sound sensor, with the sensitivity knob. It is the kind of kit where the tubes are wired to the box, and the box has a cigarette plug adapter coming from it.

Now, this thing is uuuuugly and I don't want it hanging all over my dash either, so I want to wire it into the cig lighter (or something else) from behind the dash, where it can't be seen. Can I just cut off the adapter and use the wires to connect to existing ones? I've heard that some have transformers integrated that would be necessary to make the lights function but the cig lighter already has one right?

Any idea/suggestions/tips on how I should "stealthify" this?  If it helps, the car is a 1998 Mazda Protege

The plug is this type:

It doesn't look like it has a transformer in it.  Pop it apart and see if it has a transformer and to see which wire is which. The center pin is positive.
