I have always had either trucks or vans but now I have a car. I'm thinking that trunk mounted subs would make passive radiators out of the deck speakers, but I've never heard of anyone using baffels. I want to be extra sure about this before I install anything else.

Thanks to everyone that has been so helpful before.

My wife will never understand why, lucky for her!

Yes subs will interfere with the rear deck speakers. This is another reason for foam hats or plastic baffles. Realize that by putting these baffles onto the speakers will limit their low end response however. American Internation and XTC make speaker baffles for this application.

Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.

Although very seldom installed or called for, I think it is worth the few dollars that they cost to keep from any damage to your full ranges. Might as well go ahead and take the extra step.

Most sedans have a baffle provided by the manufacturer which separates the trunk from the underside of the rear shelf.  If the car in question doesn't have one, you have to fabricate your own.  Hats are an inexpensive solution.  Some people take the rear speakers and baffle out to let the sub pressure into the car through the speaker holes.
Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

Subs are the bullies of the trunk.  They like to beat up on the smaller, weaker speakers.  You might want to strap down the lug wrench tightly just in case. will subs abuse other trunk speakers? - Last Post -- posted image.

Sorry, your thread title brought up a rather humorous visual.

He he, that's good.  "Watch it bud, or I'll throw you in the trunk with the subs!"
