I'm working on my 2nd f/g project, and am working with a lot more knowledge on this round, although I seem [once again] to have plunged in over my head. we'll see what tomorrow has to offer. Anyways, I was in Wally World looking for fleece, and none of it strectched the way I imagined it should, or that I wanted it to. So I bought some ribbing instead. it's very stretchy in all directions, and it fairly thick, and priced the same. Has anyone tryed ribbing? I'll let you know how it works out for me.

Oh! I also found, in the dollar store, aluminum foil tape. looks like shiny ducttape, but it is, actually, aluminum foil, with a sticky side. I've head of 'masking' project surfaces with aluminium foil, so the resin won't affect a seperate work surface, I'm using this stuff to mask off my center console, then lay the ribbing over it and resin from there, we'll see what happens.

I would be worried that there would be a ton of sanding if you used that.

well, it's kind of like that, I've been taking pic's, once I'm done, or the camera's out, I'll post pic's of it. it's a very small, light ribbed form.  as for now, I've got the center console taped off with the aluminum tape [it looked like a broken prop from an ear;y '90's "B" movie] and I've stretched the ribbing over it, and I'll be putting the resin on today. I've also got some door panels I'm hopefully going to be resining otday as well. I'll keep you posted.

Oh hell nooo, you need smooth fleece...that material that auex posted up would be a headache to sand, I could even imagine what a pain it would be to even resin!

I'd advise against the tape, or use mold release wax on the tape. Since its tape it wont want to seperate from the surface you mounted to. You will actually have to pull harder to release the fibreglass from the surface you adhered it to. Since the tape will want to stick to the surface and the resin will want to stick the tape. Plain tinfoil won't stick. Good luck

Don't use that tape. It sounds like it is duct patch tape. REAL PAIN IN THE REAR to remove. If you are going to use foil, I recommend heavy duty aluminum foil from like Wal-mart or something. Shiny side up it actually works great for helping to make a mold. Just make sure it is the heavy duty stuff. The standard stuff tears way too easily. Tape it off with green masking tape made for automotive use. it will leave almost no residue (if any) and F/G doesn't stick to it easily. plus it is easy to work with. most auto repair stores carry it. I found recently that many Wal-marts are carrying it too. REALLY good stuff for taping off.

As for the pic aeux has up, that's a piece of knitting. what it sounds like you have is softened corduroy. cotton ones stretch a bit, but it's not as good as smooth fleece. Yours will be a bit of a pain to sand down, but it should hold fine. Just gotta be extra patient with it.

If he wants to use that tape, I would say make sure that you have a layer of masking on the actual surface of the center console and then use the tin foil tape over top.

the best tape to use is the blue painters tape. i used that for my fiberglass center console and the mold popped right out. then again i only had like 3 layers of glass.

But the green tape is made specifically for this purpose. flexible and f/g resistant. it's the stuff the pros use.
