Dont know if this is the right section to post in, but had a quick question...

I am contemplating making a small home security system out of a car alarm. What would be the most cost efficient way of powering this?

Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Many home alarms already run on 12 volts. All you'd need is a small transformer from 110 volts AC to 12 volts DC.

My ex once told me I have a perfect face for radio.

make sure you get a transformer that will handle the amperage requirement of you car alarm including the siren and any other powered equipment you add to it. What are you planning on hooking up?? 110v to 12v options ? - Last Post -- posted image.

I have an old Autopage RS720LCD lying around that I am going to be using.

This is mostly to help me in understanding how to setup a car alarm without destroying my car. So I figure I might as well make a fun little project with it while I'm messing with it.

Any specific products you guys can suggest on a transformer ? Any Amp ratings, etc...

a small power supply from like radio shack would be a way to go or ebay. saw a few today on there.

the money you will pay for the transfomer you can buy a power supply thats setup for this purpose for the same money or a little more.

radio shack has them starting at 20 bucks and they go up from there. the difference in price change is the diference in amparge output of the power supply. the more it costs the more amps it will supply and then will be adjustable.

but i would go for a cheaper one seeing your only learning how to hook up a alarm. confirm the total of the alarm and what ever options your going to add to the alarm and get a power supply that is rated a little higher. good luck
