I just got two alpine 12" type Rs, and I need to create a box. I want it to go all the way across behind the back seat (40"). Any suggestions for the best dimensions to make them sound the loudest/best and how to mount the amps?

SPL or SQ? the box demensions will be alot bigger if you make a vented box, but it will have higher SPL, less sound quality. check with the manuals for cubic feet of sealed or vented.

If they're the new ones with a 500 watt RMS rating, put them in vented or ported boxes.
Each woofer should be in a vented box with a net internal volume of 1.3 ft^3 tuned to 33hz.
