First time posting...i read through the descriptions and this seemed like the one to post this in. If its not....im sorry.
We just installed a JVC Stereo in a 1998 Ford Escort ZX2 w/ "Ford Premium Sound" *What a joke that is*. The system had a stock CD changer. The stock radio is built in this huge plastic blob in the middle of the dash and has the heat controls built into it also. I purchased an aftermarket kit to allow for the instalation of a single din unit. After locating the stock amp under the drivers seat and testing wires to determine what were the speaker wires (could not find wiring diagram for zx2 w/ premium sound), we bypassed the amp ran new wires from head unit to stock wires under driver seat. All speakers and the stereo work perfectly fine. We had to remove the heat control modules from the stock unit and mount them on the aftermarket kit. Once this was done, we put the kit in place, installed cd player....and.......no heat.........OMG.........the temp control seems to work perfectly fine, at 60 you can feel a tiny bit of heat from the vents. The module for where the air comes from seems to work fine, when you change it you can hear the vents opening and shutting. The rear defrost button works. The speed module doesnt seem to work, but when the blower motor isnt turning on it wouldnt. All wires are hooked up to the proper places, everything worked perfect before we began this Epic Quest to put a cd player in a ZX2. Any ideas??? Its very cold here right now and heat would be awsome at this point!!!
Hopefully thank you all in advance!

Isn't there a cable on the left side( driver side) of center dash, under dash that operates Vent / Heat??

Yeah, I remember now, what mo said about cables. It's been a little while since I've done one of those.
The easiest/best way is to get under the dash, reach up and manipulate the knobs........then you will see where/how the cable attaches....detach it......repeat if there are cables on the other knob(s)......then proceed with removing the dash panel.
If you didn't do it that way....if you pulled the dash out first (which is a struggle; there's very little slack on those cables)........anyway, you may have forgotten to reattach a cable, or if you pulled the dash out hard, maybe the cable is broken or pulled apart.
The fan switch is ONLY electric; no cable. But I believe, if the vent-door knob is set to the "off" position, the fan will not work...... so that has to be working properly before you'll get the fan going.

if you look under the dash on the driver side you will see the heater box cable. there is one long white clip that you pull to detatch the whole cable. that is the safest way to pull out the entire radio surround wothout breaking anything.

Yes...agreed! My kid had one of these rediculous POS's. I shouldn't complain.....I bought it for her....anyways, Undo the cables AT the heater vents under the dash. I did mine at Christmas 04....when here in  beautiful warm and dry western Washinton state, it was 25 degrees and "moist" I thought it was gonna be a quick and simple job....NOT.
