Heh Guys:

So I've gone through 2 sets of CDT's EuroFrame series 5.25" midbasses in like 2 months...

I'm running a bandpassed 150watts to my front midbasses... 100hz - 3600hz... which actually sounds quite good, but, as one would imagine, I put an awful lot of pressure on those front speakers. I've actually managed to burn up the phase plug on the front of the CDT's twice now.. so clearly I've begun looking for other drivers.

As much as I'd like to stick with CDT, they don't really offer anything else in the way of a motor structure.. the HD series is obviously the same magnet/motor attached to a different cone, and the ES is seriously out of my price-range...

So looking at straight drivers, I was rather interested in these Morels ... the 8-ohm impedence is fine b/c I'll still be showing them 90watts but I'm not really sure how to read if a speaker like this is suitable for an infinite baffle application...

Thoughts?

Those look like nice speakers. Morel is generally one of my favorites.

Let's back up a second to your real issue. You are "burning up" the CDT drivers with 150 watts eh? Hmm, could that be because they are only rated for 60 watts? Nah...

check the amp! I know this sounds strange but I had 2 e6450 amps that were square waving the speakers and toasting them. The power is not the cause of the problem or you could have some voltage issues where the car is producing something like 15 volts dc. Rare but possible. Are the speakers you toast on the same bindings ? I love JL, i sell tons of the stuff here at our store in Tempe, Az so don't get me wrong but I myself have seen that very amp do the same number on speakers.

I have to disagree: if you feed 150 watts rms to a speaker only rated for 60 watts rms it will definitely fry.

My ex once told me I have a perfect face for radio.

Nice system you've put together since I've been MIA....

Have you considered moving to a 3-way front stage, with separate midbass and midrange drivers? Instead of continually burning up 5" drivers, how about finding a way to get some real 6-8" midbass drivers that can handle some more power into your system.

As long as you're looking at 8ohm drivers, consider the Adire Extremis. After building both the adire/exodus kit 61 and kit 2641 for home use, I have to say I'm a believer in the xbl2 technology. Talk about the ability to keep pumping out clean bass at high volume levels...

I mean... I was actually asking about the Morel mids, not "someone tell me that I was overrunning my midranges," but as long as you cats brought it up, I'll go ahead and point out that DYohn himself always takes point when it comes to explaining the whole "clean sine wave into a speaker" is all that really matters ...excepting drastic thermal stress of course...

Again, which is why I've focused on the Morel mid... many experienced members here find Morel to be among the *top* choices that can be made... aside from slights against using home drivers for car applications for reasons like differences in environmental stresses... it has the power handling I need ... the higher impedence virtually ensures against my own stylings..

To me... this mid looks great for my application, but I've never tried a driver like this ... ?

Cheers appreciate it! Honestly, the kudos go to heamphyst (I know he's lurking somewhere! I've been MIA myself for a good 2 months..!) he designed my entire front stage and did a *great* job of it. I've never heard *screaming* like I get from my front end now.. the entire e6450 feeds it so I get like 400 watts on my front speakers alone..

As much as I'd enjoy moving along to a proper midbass setup I'm really not in a vehicular situation to do it.. the car I'm driving now is starting to get its first transmission/clutch problems and I'm really eyeing a new RSX... maybe in a year or two.. to jump to a proper 3-way, I'd need new active xovers, as well as new midbasses/midwoofers and it'd be far more than I'm willing to invest in this car now..

If I can just settle on front-mids I can *finally* be *done* with this stereo.

Sedate:

I would buy the Morel mid and then fiberglass together a sealed enclosure for the midrange. Since your crossover point is high (100hz) the sealed configuration will help control cone movement better than the IB and increase power handling. You don't stand to lose much of anything since you aren't expecting sub 100hz frequencies from that driver anyway.
