I'm sure this question is on most rookie car audioist's mind, so let me ask it.  What is the best way to decide what size H/O alternator you need.

The biggest one you can pay for.

It all starts with the alternator. That is the single most important upgrade to do if you plan on adding amps. Like arrow12 said, the more power you can afford, the better. Make sure to at least be able to supply enough power for what you add. If you add an amp that needs a 40 amp fuse you need to upgrade the alternator at least that many amps also.
