I was just browsing the latest Crutchfield catalog and noticed the new eclipse line there.  One curiosity, I notice that compared to other head units, all of the eclipse units have low rms power ratings (14 rms).  Sorry if this is a dumb question, but should this be a concern at all if  you are using an external amp anyway?  I mean would the 14rms signal be in any way inferior to the 22 rms from my current head unit if I'm using the external amp?  And why is the eclipse rms rating so low anyway?  Is it based on a different voltage at which it was rated or what?  Overall just curious if these head units are in the upper part of the "quality" scale.  Thanks.

Yes, Eclipse head units are at the top of the quality scale.  Their internal amplifiers are very clean and the listed power ratings are 100% accurate as opposed to the inflated ratings on many other brands.  Plus they have far lower distortion performance, so it is a usable 14 watts.  Realize that most listening is done using less than 10 watts.  The internal power amps are not used when using the line-level signals and external amplifiers.

Wow, that's a quick answer.  Thanks much DYohn.  That puts my mind at ease about including them in my choices for a new HU.

No problem.  BTW, I use only Eclipse or Nakamichi head units in my cars.
