watched on CNN the other night where the were telling people that if you had a cell phone you could transmit your keyless entry over the lines. How in the heck can that work?

There are a couple of services and devices that offer a call in number with an access code that transmit via satellite the proper information to a module in your vehicle that will respond.

Here is the Audiovox version.

Yea I know about those but they were talking about locking your keys in the car and you called your hubby and they pressed the remote and unlocked your car withthe signal that was transmitted from your cell phone from your nubby that pressed the remote for your keyless entry

While attempting to transmit over a cell phone as described above will not work, there is an interface that will allow you to use any phone to activate features in your vehicle. It's called CarLink and it's available from Audiovox. Years ago there was a monthly fee to use the service required to use the unit, but I believe it's free now. If I'm not mistaken you call an 800 number, then enter your code to access your vehicle, then enter function codes to activate various outputs.

DEI had that years ago with the Valet Car-Comm units.....

That seems to be the main selling point for OnStar, if you believe the ads they're constantly running.

Always wonder how the customers call OnStar to get them to unlock their car for them if they don't have a cell phone available- and it seems like they generally don't, since the other main selling point is to use it to call for help when they have an accident.

I could see it being useful if they maybe needed the OnStar rep to translate to english when contacting emergency services, but that never happens in the ads. cell phone and keyless entry - Last Post -- posted image.

CNN, as usual, is dead wrong with this urban legend too. I've already tried this with a bunch of buddies (drunken bet, don't ask) and it never even gave a hint of working no matter whose phone or remotes we used.
