2000 explorer dome light door ajar

hey everyone whats happening , ive got a little problem with my 200 explorer xls the door ajar light stays on all of the time and th dome light has to be put in the dome override position so the light dosent stay on all night. whats the best way to figure out which door switch is bad? 

This seems to be a common problem on a lot of Fords. One thing to try is to spray a generous amount of WD-40 into the latch mechanism on the door. This was an instant fix for my Taurus.

This is very common problem on Fords.The door ajar switch is located inside on your door latch.Most often the plunger on the switch sticks or seizes due to lack of lubrication.Give your latches a good lubrication and give it a few days and see what happens.If not then try dis-connecting the switches one at a time but you have to take the door panels off.

on my 97 explorer, the actual door trigger inside the door on the latch had broke. i'd be drivng and hit a bump then the door ajar would chime. open and slam the door and it'd go away. just another thought out there. like was said, test each indiviual door trigger wire

Yes, definitely a problem with Fords, with the switch built into the doorlatch. Although you should always test and verify things, it is most likely the driver's door, as that one gets the most use. I believe the driver's doorswitch wire would be yellow/black, in the harness coming in from the door; it should test as a ground only when the door is open......you could try finding it and testing it. Probably the easiest thing, though, would be to just go ahead and remove the driver's door panel, go inside the door cavity with a flashlight, unplug the two-wire plug at the doorlatch, and see if that fixes it. Couple of other thoughts: --You'll need to have the driver's window closed, so you can reach in there. Leave another window open, so you can't lock yourself out. --The electric motor for the power doorlocks also happens to have a two-wire plug; you don't want to confuse this with the other two-pin plug at the doorlatch........if you undo a plug, and your domelight stays on but your driver's power lock no longer works, you've undone the wrong plug. --The door panel on that Explorer is very easy to remove. There are just a few 7mm screws; stoop down and look at the door from all directions to find them all. When the screws are removed, grasp the door panel with your hands and slide it UP. If you try pulling it out toward you, you'll break the hooks. If it won't slide up with a little pressure, you've probably missed one of the screws.
