ok, here we go guys(deep breath)...I have a 1970 skylark that i left with a friend while moving to a new state.I had a deep cycle battery installed up front with a 1000rms in the trunk. He drove the car one weeekend and a week later he says the battery is dead(who knows why,but it is).Upon testing @autozone,they said it (the battery)is now junk.So I at least need a new battery. Now, could the problem also be the alternator? If so, do you have any recommendations on a new alternator and battery.(size, price, where, etc) remember the amp!

i woluld say get it checked.  the dead batt could be from a bunch of reasons not pertaining to the alt. did your friend say that the batt light or voltage meter on the dash was coming on?

i would change the batt and then go from there

I would get a second opinion on the deep cycle battery. If it's an Optima, the battery can discharge completely 3 or 4 times before it can't hold a charge anymore. In the meantime, get the alterntor checked to see if the brushes need replacing ( which it probably does ). You can get rebuild kits and do it yourself or get a new one from an autoparts store.

Is that 1000 watts rms?  If so, you're putting a huge load on the alternator, which can put it to an early death.  This could be why the battery is losing charge.  If so, I recommend an upgrade.
