They very widely from car to car, and from manufacturer to manufacturer.  Some OEM alarms are done in-house, some are made by other companies, some are made my big names in aftermarket car alarms (Alpine used to make the alarms for Honda but I don't think they still do).

The trend today seems to be for the OEM to include the alarm in the body control module.  It makes sense to do that since almost every component needed for an alarm is somehow associated with the BCM.

OEM brains are typically under the drivers dash, in the drivers or pass kick panel, behind the glovebox, or under the center console.  There isn't a set place to put them!

Newer security features are built into the bcm.

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer (the people who made the car)
BCM = Body Control Module (typically the computer that controls the interior functions of the car)
