In my mitsu. eclipseI have a dvc 4ohm 12" alpine type-r sub run by a alpine mrd-m605 amp and a cda-9851 headunit.  I am having trouble tuning the controls on the amp to made the sub sound right (hits certain levels hard but other levels of sound are basically inaudible). Also I do not know much about tuning subs, and would rather not pay someone to tune it if I can avoid it.  I know there are controls from 30-200 HZ on the amp as well as an adjustment between 15 or 24 db/oc (or something like that), also a subsonic filter  between off -15- and 30 hz.  On the actual screen there is a gain controll a bass eq adjustment .  The sub is in a tad bigger sealed box than reccomended but shouldnt affect too much as it is baaaarely bigger.  Just wondering if anyone can suggest some numbers to help my sub sound right. Thanks

OK here's a place to start:  On the amplifier, set the bass boost to 0.  Set the low-pass filter to 100Hz and the crossover slope to 24db/oct.  Set the subsonic filter to OFF.  On the head unit, set the bass EQ to flat or zero, and set the level control to mid-band (if it goes to 12 set it to 6.)  Now make sure your amplifier input level (gain) is set correctly and you should be ready to go.  (If you don't know how to set the gain, use the SEARCH function at the top of the forum.)

just for my knowledge, what is the difference as you go from 30-200 hz? I know it changes the sound but not specifically what it does at 30 hz versus 200.  Also im not quite sure what you are talking about for the mid-band, I dont believe I have such a control.

The "30-200Hz" control is a low pass filter and the setting adjusts the top frequency your subwoofer will play at full strength.  Set it to about 100Hz.  By "mid-band" I mean set your head unit subwoofer level control to the middle of its scale.

Ah, I see, also im having trouble setting the gain, my cd burner decided to die, so there anyway i could do this without test tunes. Also, what is the importance of setting gains, i messed with it a little and the higher the number the less powerful the subwoofer got, i currently have it set at 0.1 I believe.

Wait until you get another headunit, because your gain setting will be different.

You can purchase one of the Bass Mechanix CDs.  HERE's one (they sell several different options.)  If you have a good record store in your area (not a mall store) you can ask them as well.

My mistake, for some reason I thought I read cd player instead of burner.  I replied to your pm.
