Speed Pulse wire in 2004 Subaru Outback?

I just picked up a Pioneer AVIC Z1 and decided to install it myself. So far everything's looking to be a piece of cake, however I'm dumbfounded as to where the Speed Pulse wire is. after scouring the forums and finding a handful of topics on the subject, I have yet to find anything specific to my vehicle. Perhaps someone out there can help?
I'm installing the unit in a 2004 Subaru Outback Sport (2.5L). If you have any information as to where I can find the wire, or perhaps it's location on the ECU and how to access it cleanly, please let me know!

On the 4 cyl models the vss is in pin 10 of the 20 pin plug. On the 6 cyl models the vss is in pin 1 of the 22 pin plug. On the PZEV models the vss is in pin 14 of the 22 pin plug.
The vss wire is also found behind the instrument cluster.

Ah yes, forgot to mention I have the 4cyl. (never even heard of PZEV)
Anyway, I happened to stop by my local Best Buy (who installs NAV units for around $150) and after quite a bit of begging they decided to look it up for me:
"Pin 14 of 26, should be purple" he said.
This conflicts with your suggestion, and I think I might know why. The Outback Sport Is really just an Impreza wagon, NOT the big soccer-mom family wagon usually associated to the Outback. I’ve seen this happen before (reference material fails to make this distinction and often points you in the wrong direction) so I suspect Either Best Buy or your source is in error. Now the problem is deciding who’s correct.
First off, I’m starting to doubt if I’m actually looking at the ECU as both of you said it should be on the passenger side. I’ve been all around in there and the most ECU’y thing I can find is a relay box with only a few wires coming out of it. I believe the ECU is actually right below the steering column – it’s a big, flat box with two plugs attached, each plug having around 18 wires (I haven’t counted – there could be more but it’s too late to go out there right now). So, how can I be certain I’m even looking in the right place?
Second, I obviously need to test both wires before actually hooking it up and risking damage. You mention there's a VSS on the cluster? Maybe I should locate that and test for continuity against the two conflicting cables? What would you do? How can I confirm who's right?

On the non-turbo models the vss is in pin 10 of the 20 pin plug. On the turbo models the vss is in pin 1 of the 22 pin plug. On the STi models the vss is in pin 27 of the 35 pin plug.

also, check under the carpet on the passenger side for your ECM.

Okay. I just found out from a (more informed) friend that what I *thought* was the ECU is most clearly not (what is it BTW?)
Anyway, it appears that it's on the passenger side, under a plate under the carpet. I don't have time to take it apart right now, but I'm hoping when I do I'll find exactly what you've described.

check for a GREEN/ YELLOW at the cruise module there in the drivers kick, it's the black one that says CRU on it.

Extreme1, I forgot to thank you for all your help.
After you were able to point me in the direction of the CRU, it was a piece of cake. Turns out there were four GREEN/ YELLOW wires and two GREEN/ black going into the CRU, so I ran multimeter down the pins and found one at around 4.5 that jumped up to around 4.7 at 40 mph. Hooked it in and as far as I can tell it's working.
