i'm trying to decide which would sound better. 2 identical subs (alpine R type 12"DVCs) the only difference is that one model is a 4 ohm DVC and the other is a 2 ohm DVC. the price differnece is a bug 5 bucks....is there any real difference between the sound (plannning on using an old school Rockford Fosgate 501BD amplifier or similar...power is not a problem here)

They will sound the same. Purchase the version that works best with your amp.

99% of the time you will be better off with the dvc 4 ohm version as there are far more amplifiers available to choose from. Your choice of sub is 100% dependent on the amp you have or intend to purchase. If you are in the process of choosing an amp, post up your short list of amplifiers and or what you are currently using or going to use.

I'm looking at 3 amps (all rockford fosagete)

amp# 1 RF 501BD: 300 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms (i'm told this is a horrible understatment or wattage) $300

amp# 2 RF 1501BD: 750watta RMS x 1 at 4 ohms (also believe to be horribly under-rated) $250

amp# 3RF T10001BD: 500W RMS x 1 at 4 ohms (sleeker sexy look with internal cooling fan) $350

planned matched sub: Alpine SWR 1242D: power handling: 200-500 watts RMS; peak power: 1,500 watts $115

Any amplifier you have specified should work wine with two of those subs. Purchase the DVC 4-ohm versions and you can wire in series-parallel for a net 4-ohm mono load on your amp. If you don't know how to do this, click on the "Woofer Wiring" link on the left column of this page and enter your inrformation.
