I have a Pioneer deh 1600 HU.  I put into a 1986 Ford Thunderbird Elan.  I ran all new speaker wire.  There is nothing between the HU and the speakers.  On power up the speakers pop once and then I get nothing.  If on power up there is no pop everything works fine.  Sometimes when I am pushing buttons sound will cut in or out but the display is always operational.  All of the buttons work whether there is sound or not.  Is there a short where the HU and faceplate connect?

double check and make sure none of your speaker wire or leads are touching metal. another thing you can do is disconnect all speakers and try a test speaker on each channel to see of there might be something wrong with the deck

Hey thanks.  I disconnected the front right speaker and it seems to work fine.  I guess I'm looking for a new speaker.  Do I match to the factory speaker by the ohms?

Just get a set of new front speakers instead of just one. Buying a new set of 4 ohm speakers will be what your looking for.
