Hello,

I'm after some advice regards the Nokia CK-7W car kit.

I've just installed a Nokia CK-7W car kit in my W reg year 2000 Alfa 156 but the stereo will not mute?  It's connected correctly to the back of the stereo.  It's the standard fit Alfa Alpine unit.

The stereo does not have a mute facility/button as far as I can tell, could this be the reason why it won't work?

Is there anything I can do to make the stereo mute?

The stereo in Alfa 156's does not activate when the ignition is operated, it's separate.

To activate the mute function, the PINK ( or PINK/WHITE ...can't remember ) wire must see ground when turned on and nothing when off. You will need to see if the Nokia mute wire grounds to the Alpine wire with a DMM.

A DMM is a digital multi-meter and on the Nokia there will be a wire that says MUTE and this wire must output a (-) signal in order for the Alipne HU to respond properly and mute when activated. If you take the PINK wire from the Alpine HU and ground it manually while playing music, it will mute and when you lift the wire off of ground it will return to normal volume. Connect the mute wire from the Nokia if it's (-) ato the PINK wire of the Alpine HU and it should work as long as the Nokia wire outputs a (-) ground signal.

Just a thought, what is pink wire from the Alpine Head Unit currently connected to?

Will I need to cut the wire?

Nothing if it'snot being used.

The stereo does not have a menu button.

The manual is no use either as it just contains a very simple statement saying "if a phone car kit is fitted then the sound will aoutomatically mute and the words TELE-MUTE will appear on the display"

Obviously this does not happen and there is no further troubleshooting info.

I could try the solution mentioned previously in this thread but as the hands-free kit is connected correctly to the stereo and the fact the manual is so blunt about it then I wonder if there is a simple solution?

The mute wire on the CK-7 is yellow. Try using a computer safe test light on the wires on the back of your radio. Just probe each wire until the radio mutes. Once you have located the mute wire(if you have one) just connect the yellow wire from the nokia car kit. If you dont have a mute wire, you can use a relay on the ignition wire of the radio to interupt the audio.
