MY friend just took his truck to a supposed reputable audio shop in Melbourne Fl where we live. He has a new 05 Chevy
colorado. He is wanting installed a new clarion deck, an orion 1600.1 amp, a pair of orion 6.5 compoments, and a pair of 10" orion hp10d2 subs. It is a very basic system and all parts are brand new in boxes.
THe install shop today quoted him 600 for the install. That includes 100 for a custom made box they would build.
THat just seemed rediculously high to me. They said something about because the factory deck was wired into the main computer of that truck that he would need some kind of special 80$ wire harness and an extra 100$ just to put in the deck due to its complicated nature.
I told him to expect 25-35 for speaker install,45 ro so for amp install, and same for deck install, but $600 almost put him into cardiac arrest.
What do you all think about that? He is considering just selling everything and staying with factory system but I really dont want him to do that as he has been looking forward to having a nice system for a long time.

The shop wasn't making up any stories about the parts needed to replace the factory radio. You need a radio replacement module on most newer GM trucks and cars. If the $600.00 included all the wires and other hardware, then yes the price is reasonable. Ask them for a price break down on parts and labor. You can always shop around for price quotes at other shops. Just make sure that the workmanship is the same and that you are comparing apples to apples. You get what you pay for and the lowest price isn't always the best deal in the long run.   Expect to pay at least 4-5 hours shop labor plus parts.

the shop quoted him correctly...he does need the harness and yes the price is right.   the hassle of relocation on the factory deck is an extra expense...not really worth $100 but then again it pretty much handling 2 decks so that could be fair price.

im sure you can find a shop to do the install for a cheaper price. but is that what you really want? you may get it done cheaper somewhere else but the check engine light may come on, or the airbag light, or some other electrical problem might surface! just remember:
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!
