Power inverter auto start

Hey, I want to wire a power inverter in such a way that it only provides power when a plug is inserted. I was thinking to remove the switch, and wire the red a black wires to the opposite sides of the female AC plug in such a way that the circuit is closed when there is a piece of metal (the male plug) in between the contacts. Don't think you want to connect the AC output to the switch without some kind of isolation- don't know how your inverter is set up, but if the switch just closes the 12V to the inverter, you'd need a relay or something. Not sure what you could use to switch the relay though, if your AC jack doesn't have any kind of switch contact in it.
