Hey,
I want to wire a power inverter in such a way that it only provides power when a plug is inserted. I was thinking to remove the switch, and wire the red a black wires to the opposite sides of the female AC plug in such a way that the circuit is closed when there is a piece of metal (the male plug) in between the contacts. Will AC power effect the DC running through the switch's wires?

Don't think you want to connect the AC output to the switch without some kind of isolation- don't know how your inverter is set up, but if the switch just closes the 12V to the inverter, you'd need a relay or something. Not sure what you could use to switch the relay though, if your AC jack doesn't have any kind of switch contact in it.
