I installed an Alpine MRP-F240 amp today. It played perfectly for a few hours, now at half volume it stops playing. It goes on and off about every 5 seconds. Do I have a wiring short, or a bad amp?

Disconnect the subs and turn the amp on again. Is it still going into protection.? Yes, disconnect the RCA cables and test again? Yes, ensure you have a good ground and test again. Yes, ensure that you have +12v on the remote on line by testing the wire when it is disconnected from the amp. If the wire tests fine and the ground is fine, hook the wire back to the amp again. Next check the fuse at the battery. If all is well in the above checks, then the amp is fubar. If the issue goes away when the speaker wires are unplugged or the rca cables are unplugged, then those wires need to be checked for shorts or being clinched under something. This will send an amp into protection.
