Well i know there is a differents between a JL W7 and like a Sony Sub from wall mart but i was givin a chance to get into a new shop and they carry MTX, Clarion, Orion, and then a some stuff i never heard of like extream. The manager/installer was telling me that the thunder9500 was better than the JL W7 and the kicker L7 (not saying he is right or wrong) I have worked more with kicker,jl, memphis more than any other brands. He was saying that 9500 will out do kicker or jl for spl. I just want your opinion on that and i would like to know say you walk into your local shop or for those of you who own one (not like a big WWC just every day shop) what do you carry and why.
Thanks and sorry for the long post

as a installer i'd have to say that the best stuff in the world is the stuff in my stockroom. but all three of the woofs you mentioned are great. the jl is not an spl woofer. i think its a toss-up mas to the powerhandling winner between l7 and 9500. you can go right on kicker's web site and get the specs for thier "spl box " or "street-bass box" build it and be loud as heck. as an owner you have to look around your neiborhood and see what your customers want and what the competition doesn't have. there is such a thing as limited distributing that means you can't sell some products that other stores sell. lately i've been using some kole audio and powerbass stuff that rocks like hell. i know that not too long ago i'd have said it was junk but i'm starting to be a believer in the pacific rim stuff. i do kenwood jl audio alpine and some mtx allthough i haven't been too happy with mtx lately.

I carry the brands that suit the customer needs the best. Everyone is different and has different goals. My job is to find the right product to fit the goal. There is no best product for everyone. I choose my products based on value, made up of price, capabilities, performance, tonal response, warranty and support. If I do not have this from the brand, how can I give it to a customer?
Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.

mtx is cool stuff but i smoked 2 amps that where perfectly installed and was told i'd abused them. i wanna say look people want to play your amps loud!! make them tougher dammit. i remember installing fosgate stuff back in the days that was strong. it didn't go up in smoke easy and the company seemed to understand that people wanted to crank up their systems hard!like jlaudio i love jl's gear but you can't abuse it. if you do it smokes.

Did you feed them perfectly with the perfect power? mtx amps are very power hungry and if you don't give them the right power and you play it at high volume you can smoke them  easily, and that's not perfect.

Well I am in the same boat as Rob, although I don't carry eclipse yetBrands, what do you carry and why? -- posted image.. Product quality is a big concern for me. I have asked lots of questions on this forum and talked to other shops I am affiliated with. I am also guilty of doing my own product tests, in house. I watch what my competitors do a lot also, they chase prices and bigger profit margins which is bad business IMO.  And whatever shop you walk into there lines are always better than the next..........My lines are panasonic, jvc, pioneer, kenwood, concept, dei-xtreme, eclipse (someday $$) was doing mtx but it didn't work out.

Unfortunately he is basing this on a marketing paper MTX wrote, which is pure BS.  They describe "benifits" their subs have without disclosing the consequences of those design choices.  You see, speaker engineering is a practice of compromises.  You choose one feature, but are forced to compromise elsewhere.  for instance MTX claims to utilize a smaller enclosure requirement.  However Hoffman's Iron Law states that if you choose to use a smaller enclosure, you must give up either efficiency or low frequency extention.  Also, they are comparing manufacturer suggested enclosure sizes, which MTX always rates way too small.  Comparing the two subs in a sealed enclosure with an identical Qtc shows that the JL sub actually requires an enclosure less than half the size.  Another example of the compromises is the voice coil diameter.  Sure having the larger diameter voice coil helps for power handling.  However it also means more moving mass to deal with, as well as a higher inductance which produces more distortion.  I personally would much rather have a W7 any day of the week.  However, as Rob suggests, the 9500 may actually be better for someone else.  So it would still be a good woofer to offer to customers.
