The nice thing about ESN is if the unit does get stolen Eclipse will replace it for up to a year as long as it is registered.

A cd player, any cd player can and will get stolen. A detach face for the most part tells the thief that it is in the glove box, the center console or somewhere else in the car (like on the headunit). In 10 years time I have had 6 theft replacements and 1insurance replacement as compared to 50 or so insurance claims for detach face units. I think ESN works just fine. (and when it doesn't you had best hope that I do not catch you). esn problems - Page 2 -- posted image.

I have had personal experience with ESN... I like it. My Nak was stolen once, a Pioneer stolen once, and several other flavors of "lesser" brands "borrowed" from my car...
My 8051 was NEVER stolen... had it over 5 years, and I parked in places FAR worse than my old neighborhood, (where the otheres were stolen) and never once have I come out to a busted winow and a hole in my dash. Even if they WEREN'T the best sounding decks in the industry, I'd buy them FOR the ESN... Good technology that WORKS, and if nothing else, a good deterrent.
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."
