Instead of fiberglass matting, could I just use cotton?  Like a hanes T-shirt for kick panel sized projects?

lol, yeah thats "weird"... lol ok thanks for the info. i seen a project on fiberglassforums.com, and he used a tshirt which is why i asked.  ive been doing a lot of research and i am excited to get into my first fiberglass project.  i think kick panels are a small enough project for me to experiment with.

now i was just curious about one more thing.  lets say to make the kick panels, i mold the panel in my car.  ill get some aluminum, some masking tape, and prepare it to be molded.  now, i dont think i apply resin because there is no matting.  so i apply the resin to the aluminum and masking tape? or cant i just use a hardener to make a mold, mount my rings and then fiberglass on top of that?

you should use matt when you make the mold, because if you just have hardend resin, its gonna be really brittle and probably snap or break. i would recommend using at least one layer of matt on the kickpanel itself too. you dont wanna do all that work and have it crack...
