After searching through all the old forum threads concerning speaker wire I am surprised I couldn't find the answer to this question. But I am building an enclosure for a guy running a Digital Designs 9512f which comes stock with 10 gauge speaker wire ran directly from each VC. The speaker's power handling rates at 1500w rms / 3000w music / 6000w peak. He wants 10 gauge speaker wire ran from these leads to the box terminals. I know that it is unnecessary, especially over such a short distance. But I don't care, I'm going to run it anyway.

My question is.. is there any reason I shouldn't pair up 10 gauge power wire? I read that you should only use pure copper leads for speaker wire and I don't know if there is anything else I should watch out for before using the power wire. This set-up will be used in competition so even a small db loss is worth avoiding where possible.

Then just use bigger wire. Copper has a 5% better conductivity than aluminum, so if you used aluminum wire, the next size up would MORE than make up for using a wire that is "too small".
However, INSIDE the passenger compartment, wire IS wire... no matter WHAT anybody tries to tell you.
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

Let me rephrase the question. I don't have any 10 gauge 'speaker wire' on hand so I'm wondering if I can just take some 10 gauge power wire and run that instead. I mean, it's basically the same thing.. I just didn't know if there was anything I need to avoid like silver plated copper or anything like that..

Wire is wire, especially for subwoofer purposes - end of story. Use what you've got on hand, as long as the size is right, and cosmetically, you like the look of it.
Esoteric cables, like silver plated copper have no place in a subwoofer system, the silver is (supposedly) to improve the conductivity of the SURFACE of the wire, for "better" high frequency transfer.

Thanks. That's what I figured. For what it's worth, the 10 gauge red power wire will look pretty cool compared to the brown 12 gauge speaker wire I normally use.
