hi, i recently hooked up a solar panel trickle charger to my car to keep the battery topped up when the car is sitting for large amounts of time. the way it works is you hook it up directly to the battery or through the cigarette lighter adapter and it keeps the battery charged, but it says in the instructions not to turn the car on with the charger plugged in. i guess because the surge would blow the chargers wiring?? is there a way to wire this using a relay so that i can hook it to my battery and not ever have to mess with it anymore. this would mean bypassing the chargers wiring upon turning on the ignition, but when the car is off, the charger turns back on. thanks a lot

how about a diode that allows outflow from solar and blocks backflow from vehicle?

it has a built in diode to keep the battery from draining at night. maybe a resistor would help keep the flow from harming the charger. any thoughts?

85: ground

86: ignition
87: capped to nothing
87a: battery
30: solar panel +

Then put the solar panel - to a good ground or the battery itself. When you turn the car to on for the ignition, it will open the relay and cut the circuit for the panel. Turning off the car will close the circuit and let the panel do it's thing.
