I'm installing a 1999 Panasonic HU into a 2005 tacoma. The HU does not have a remote turn on lead, but it does have a dark blue wire labeled "motor antenna relay control" for moving a power antenna up and down which the tacoma does not have. Can I use this dark blue wire for my remote turn on lead to the aftermarket amps?

Can anyone confirm if this dark blue wire will be hot when the HU is on and cold when the HU is off?

The only thing to possibly worry about (not sure if your HU model does this), many newer HUs close the circuit on the power antenna when you switch to a source other than the radio. So if you are listening to the radio, everything works fine. Once you start listening to the CD, the power to the amps turn off. This is easy to check with a DMM. Someone may know more about the particular HU you are using. Otherwise you may need to relay off of the ACC lead from your ignition to turn the amps on.

In Panasonic HUs the remote on lead is dark blue with white stripe. What model is your head?

It's a Panasonic CQ-DF88EUC, and the wire is solid dark blue without any stripes. I guess I'll tie into the ACC lead and use it until I upgrade the HU.

This model HU only has 4 wires:

yellow, battery

red, ACC

black, ground

dark blue, motor antenna

The blue wire will work fine for remote amp turn on. Head units that only have a power antenna trigger usually remain powered even while using the internal CD. Units that have both a power antenna trigger and a amp remote trigger usually shut the power antenna trigger off when using the CD.

Yes, the blue wire will work fine on that unit. I bought a DF88 from Crutchfield the first year it came out, in 99 or 2000 I think. It's never had any problems, and my little brother put it in his fiance's car and it's still running strong.

Thanks, the dark blue wire does indeed work fine as a remote turn on lead for the amps. The wire is hot for all modes of HU operation (CD, radio, aux). However, the multimeter is reading 0.37V on the dark blue wire even when the vehicle is turned off. Is this a problem? For reference, the ACC lead I used to be hooked into registers 0.00V when vehicle is off. Is there a safety reason I should switch back to using the ACC wire instead of the dark blue, or is there no way those amps will turn on with such a low remote turn on signal? I'm concerned that my battery will drain.

On older models, before they were different wires, blue served as both remote turn on/power antenna lead.
