Something Different, Fiberglass Intake

I created this for my 90 Integra (DA) Show Car I wanted to do something a little different. And since I have been working in the engine bay alot latley this is what I came up with. All the tubing I cut up out of an old cold air intake, and I used a PR3 stock intake arm I had laying around. Should have completed, painted, installed pics of the box itself by monday. I still have to get some of the thermal matting that summit sells to line the inside with. The only things I need to complete yet is the lid which is in the works, and the air inlet is going to be attached to a vent on the front bumper, I still need to construct a duct that is formed to the vent on the bumper and attach that tubing as well. The air box and tubing is going to be painted the same color as the valve cover. I didn't even have the box bolted in, I just wanted to snap some quick pics and threw it together, it looks like its seated a hair crooked, it will be installed straight. I am using the stock battery bracket and it needs raised a little. ----------------------------------- just got finished paint/clearing and installing the box. I need to come up with something to cover the area where the battery tray went becuase there was next to no paint on that area. A bay repaint just may be in the future. Also I need to spray the inside of the box black. Can you tell I've been sanding alot of fiberglass lately? I need to push the car out for a bath. I can't wait til spring, I haven't drove her for 16-18 months!

You should put a plexi lid on it with some LED's under the air cleaner. The inside of the box is too nice to cover up all the time. Did you fab the whole box up or glass over something else underneath?

I fabbed the entire thing, made the shape out of carboard covered in plastic tape. Put mold release wax on the taped box. The box is tapered on the bottom ends so I layed the glass on in 3 sections to get the correct shape (1 section bottom, and then the box was done in halves). I did the same thing for the lid. Once the fiberglass is dried to can pull the cardboard out. This is about a 3 week project so far. The fiberglass is 3 layers thick of the heavy chop mat. This is what I am tring to duplicate in a sense, this is a comp-tech air induction system, these are expensive and are not avaiable for my car.

Nice job, looks good. Did you relocate the battery?

The battery and cooling fan to fit the box. I did what they call a wire tuck where to hide all the wires down the frame rails and such as well. Alot of other things have also been relocated such as the fuse boxes, etc. I have alot of time in this bay.

you spent all the time tuckin the wires and everything but you didn't fill the holes in your fire wall, seems kinda odd. how hard did the tuck go for you? im considering it on my hatch or sol...

The intake is for performance and looks. Well the intake is basically a pressurized cold air intake, also the the box will be provided with lots of air, I am attaching the tubing through a duct in the front. And you don't have to worry about hydrolocking your engine from sucking up water like the other cold air intakes. Here's a little info about a pressurived intakes. ---------------------- "and i believe you may have done some research into the matter of intake performance. as some would know, when you open up the air box (or a short-ram or cold air intake) you lose a little intake air pressure. its not CRITICAL for engine performance, but that is why most automotive manufacturers design closed box intake systems. to keep the intake charge PRESSURISED. what companies like comptech etc. have done is come up with a good way to draw in cooler air, while still maintaining a good amount of pressure." ------------------------- About the holes, if you read the first post, a bay repaint is on its way, the entire car is getting sprayed again in the near future. Although I am not sure if I am filling all the holes or not, kinda gives it some character. Tucking is a b!tch, just depends how far you want to go with it. I am moving the brake portioning valve, all metal brake lines and everything else that I can. I also redid a bunch of hoses to hide them away. I have the lid for the box completed and in primer, I just need to pick up the paint to spray it.
