Here's what I'm trying to do: Connect bi-polar LEDs that would show red when the door is locked and green when the door is unlocked. The voltage drops to zero momentarily whenever either of the door lock/unlock switch is pressed otherwise it's 12V. Any idea how to construct a circuit to do that?

you'd need a flip flop IC.  I can't think of a less logic based way to do such a thing.

probably stick an Inverter IC in front of the flip flop and the voltage to zero would change to a zero to voltage.  Run the output of the inverter to the input of the flip flop chip and this would change between on and off.

Use a double pole relay controlled by the flip flop signal that would switch between pwer to the red or power to the green LED leads.

good luck.

Sorry but I'm new to electronics - just know the basic. Could you draw me a schematic of how that would look like?

it is 12v+ when locked and unlocked?

It's 12V on both the lock and unlock wires. The voltage drops to zero momentarily  when either of the switches is pressed and then returns back to 12V.

what kind of car or truck what year are we talking about? are you sure they don't rest @ ground (-)  and have a momentary positive pulse to lock or unlock?

well it's diffently a pulsed negitive system i check on that. so when the voltage drops out as you stated, what is happening is when the switch is pressed it is sending a neg(-) pulse to the respective side of the lock actuator. there's a few differnt places you can tap into the system ,

Door UnlockPink/Light Green(-) Keyless Module under Dash

or

Driver's UnlockRED / Orange Driver's Door JAM Boot

for getting it to work well what  "dias_ryan" wrote would be the cut and dry without having a ton of stuff to do one simply operation that is desired. i did a google search and got all the info i would need if doing this myself with a flip flop curcuit.  here's the link  http://www.talkingelectronics.com/FreeProjects/5-Projects/Page16.html

with a little electronic skill and time. you be on your way. good luck and let us know how you make out

I thought Radio Shack used to sell LEDS with built in circuits like this. They had three states, red, yellow and orange.
