i want to run 1 for my subs and the other for my speakers. how do i do that without using a Y adaptor. do i need a headunit that can handle the different channels? want to be able to control the subs and speakers seperatly. please guide me in the right direction

if you are using your stock head unit, you will nead a 'line output converter' for each pair of inputs (channels).

or you will need an amp that can handle 'high level inputs'

or you will need a head unit with subwoofer and speaker RCA outputs

im installing it all. i have a pioneer headunit and im not sure if i have two rca outputs havent looked. i know how to install, ive just nevver installed two amps to do two different things

if its a newer HU then it most likly has both sub and rear or front outputs, take a look then if im right then just use an rca cable for the subs. then another for the speakers. good luck, hope this helps

Yea! Maybe I can actually contribute something for a change...

To control the speakers/subs separately from the head unit, you'll nead a HU with 3 sets of pre-amp outputs. If you already have a HU with 2 sets of pre-amp outputs, then get an amplifier (if you haven't bought them already) that has a low-level RCA passthrough to send the signal to your sub amp.

You'd send the 4-channel signal from the head unit to the speaker amp with 2 RCA cables and send an RCA cable from the speaker amp to the sub amp.

However, doing this won't give you control over the sub/speakers independently, although you can compensate for it. In my case, I kept my factory in-dash changer and passed the signal to the sub amp through from the speaker amp. My Rockford Fosgate Punch sub amp has a bass controller knob that I installed under the driver's seat that I can use to quickly increase the sub output.
