All..  thanks a ton, and good conversation going on here.

Though I *love* making a part do something it wasn't meant to, I'm also a BIG advocate of the proper tool for the proper job.  I think I'm gonna bring it back, and get one that is diesel compatible.

I'll look around the forum some some recommended names.

I saw a remote start system for $129 installed at Bestbuy, but I am soooo hesitant to let anyone under the dash of my vehicles..  I've had NOTHING but bad experiences in the past, whichi is why I had my own business (at 17) doing car security back in the early 90's.  We'll see...

Thanks again everyone.

your welcome and good luck....

Some personal advice on the topic...I agree with you..I to do almost everything myself on my cars..including bodywork and mechanical..although I am an electronics guy. But I am naturally very handy and good at troubleshooting as well.

As far has having Bestbuy do it....good points and bad.  The good point is a big company like that will stand behind it's warranty..which is lifetime on labor....lifetime on the systems brain...kinda hard to beat that...they are also liable for any other damage or problem that occurs after the install if it's related.

But this is not to say you won't have problems....In a way it's a crap shoot....you might get a really good installer that takes pride in thier work...or you might get a hack the just wants to "get R done" and go home. Ask around your area who the best installers are and you will have a better chance of a perfect job.

Master5..  I hear ya, 100%.

Looks like it was actually Circuit City..  $159 for the DEI 561R, or $199 for the DEI 1400 XP.  (The $129 was for a Hornet 569T that doesn't even unlock the doors)

Since it's a truck with not much else to control, I'm leaning towards the 561R.  The only accessory I want is my horns to be on the Aux output, (NOT hooked up for arm-disarm) (They are a 4-chime train horn and are EXTREMELY loud) - shouldn't be a problem for any installer.

What's the consensus about talking to the installer and slipping him $20 or $40 to take his time on the truck?  This thing vibrates, shakes and bounces so much that ANY connection that's not 100% will fail in no time.   I also don't want to come across like an ass to the guy, but I want to be sure they hook up the wait to start wire (not just the timer), and they HAVE to use the tach input.. the voltage swings from the 200A grid heaters drops voltage to 11v while running

There's also a local guy in the installer's directory..  I'll give him a call first.

Well a real professional installer will treat every install the same regardless of any cash you slip him. They should make bulletproof connections regardless of if it is a bouncy old truck or a Maybach...and I know that I always use the tach wire because first off it is more reliable..and second I feel using tachless is a lazy copout. However, tipping is a good jesture..I know I really appreciate that myself and will definatly give better service to a generous customer at the very least. But install quality is about pride in your work..thats the bottom line IMO.

As far as coming off as an ass it might offend some installers if you tell them how do to thier job but....myself personally would respect a customer more that understands what a tach wire and "wait to start" is for so just be respectful when explaining this and it should not be a problem..if it is a problem communicating your wishes...time to find another installer.
