1/4" MDF? I'm thinking it needs to be closer to an inch for me, since the sub has such a large surround... Basically there will be a cup created between the flush ring surrounding the woofer, and the surround of the woofer itself, I need to fill that cup with material, to where the MDF of the grill ring actually touches the sub's outer ring where it screws to the enclosure. Or is there some reason that it doesn't need to reach the "bottom"?

Oh, thats right, I forgot you were making it an actual grille, not just a speaker ring to cover the mounting holes.  Note to self: crown royal is not a good companion while giving advice.

Yes, it would need to either be thicker material or you would have to make little legs for it to hold it up off the surface.  I say go with the thicker wood.
