I'm starting to put together a small system in my CRV. I want to stick with one sub. RIght now I'm planning on a 12" Type S. Now I just need help deciding between the following:

Alpine 12" SWS-1222D (2+2) with MRP-M650 running at 4 ohms which would give the sub 400 watts RMS.

OR

Alpine 12" SWS-1242D (4+4) with MRP-M450 running at 2 ohms which would give the sub 400 watts RMS.

I figure the MRP-M650 would provide more room for expansion in the future but I need some other opinions.

If you have the money to spend definitely go for the M650.  It will give you the ability to upgrade later if you choose as well as running at 4ohms.  4 ohms will run cleaner and cooler, be less stressful on your charging system and on your amp.

I 2nd that. It's better to spend a hundred dollars or so more now then to upgrade the sub later and need to drop another $500 on a new amp.

I'd go with the smaller amplifier, the 2+2ohm sub, and run at 4-ohms.
Look, that sub is rated at 300w rms. Depending on your enclosure, excursion limited power-handling of the woofer will be lower.
You'd rarely, if ever, hear the difference between 200w and 400w if you just want some good bass for a daily driver.
Don't forget that smaller amplifiers will draw less power from your electrical system, on average, than larger amplifiers.
