The other day, our local FOX station did a segment on hightech car theivery. well as usuall there was some content such as useing PDA's and such and switching computer modules and bypass harnessing. They then showed some Youtube idiot stealing a focus. I found the you tube idiot and put up with the entire video. He jumps in and hooks he orang and green together. Car starts and steers and off said moron goes even showing that there is no key in the ign... Now from exp with variouse remote starts and bypassing pats on these cars.. Is this video total BS or is there an ounce of truth to it? The car was unlocked, so no alarm was set, but wouldn't the pats sytem have to be bypassed and the steering wheel lock be snapped out? here is the link to the news story

i would think the pats would prevent that, did all focus come with the pats though? i also read a story about car thieves stealing cars with smartkeys using wireless laptops, David Beckham had two of his BMW X5's stolen this way, the thieves use the wireless laptops to hack into the cars computer, unlock the doors, turn off factory alarm, and start the car. do a search on stealing cars with laptops, there are plenty of stories about it.

stealing a car today is about as pointless as stealing a cellphone... you cant do anything with it once its reported stolen, although it would still suck, if someone is that worried about it move to an area with less crime, thats about the only way you can at least decrease the odds of it happening

I call BS on many counts on that youtube video.
--The camerman isn't invited into the car to witness the critical moment----when and how the car is actually started.
--I wasn't able to catch a glimpse of the Ford PATS LED (it's by the hazard switch on that car), but I've never encountered a Focus without it.
--The steering column cover on that car is fairly well enclosed, and the plastic is too stiff to bend aside.....I don't think those wires could be fished out without prior preparation.
--He shows connecting an orange wire to a green wire. Neither of those wire colors is used on a Focus ignition switch.
Also, even if he did turn on the ignition, how did he trigger the car to start? He doesn't mention jumping anything to the starter wire.
--Near the end of the video, he mentions something like "you gotta put on the steering lock." Well, it's actually that you have to put it off, not on, but he doesn't bother to explain that.
--He acts like a gun-toting street thug, yet wears his seat belt, drives relatively slowly, and drives with both hands. That doesn't add up right either.

I agree with Chris. All Focus are equipped with a PATS. Without a Pats key you cannot steal a ford. And green and orange are not focus colors hahaha. Funny dude though. And he was wearing his seatbelt! hahaha oh snaps son. Yeah and you do have to break the stearing column to drive that thing without a key. I call BS. 110% sure.

Can't agree more with previous comments accept:- the (half) tennis bal trick worked on Audi 80/100's (don't know what you called them over there, Fox 5000?) in the late '80s but that was just the door lock. All Foci here use a transponder and unless you can interrogate it or just happen to have the right chip forget it! It happens to be one of the hardest cars in the world to steal. Certain current cars with "Magic" keys use an RFI module to open doors and start engine eg MB, BMW. The encryption levels  used are lower than say a Clifford remote and in Eastern Europe it's not unknown for owners of these cars to be followed by someone with a laptop with WiFi and an RFI transceiver who is happily copying your codes who makes off with the car as soon as your back is turned.

As it happens UK Fords use red, grey or grey/red and green yellow for ign 12v, starter and ign.

That was my thought on the You Tube idiot, Iv'e done over 50 focuses and I know those colors don't fire the ign or for that matter even exist, the lower dash panel is still on the car as is the column shroud. and Iv'e never seen one without the pats system. I just found it interesting as to how inacurate the news broadcast was, useing this bonehead as an example. the "Proffesional" theivery expert seemed to know his stuff, but gave no actual input as to how these guys are doing it, other than haveing another cars BCM and matched key, or having a piggy back harness [assuming for diagnostic purposes from a dealer or software guy] I guess it goes to show you how inacurate these idiots in the media are. They know nothing about what they are reporting, other than what they pick up of the net.   And actually searching the net, there were a couple interesting stories abou car theft, but nothing really concrete, othere than the theives are getting really lazy , and acting like they get hit , when the driver gets out to help, their buddies get in and jack the car... Hmmmm    There was some other bone head on U toob that was breaking into cars in Vegas, and stealing anything he could get his hands on, this one seemed pretty genuine. He was bashing the windows out and such, but when he got to one of the GM cars he breaks he window, reaches in and unlocks the door... No alarm, even some of the higher end cars he hit didn't ever make a peep..   Like someone said earlier, Im just glad I don't have to put up with those types where I live at...Idiots....
