I just installed a new radio/CD player in my S-10, replacing the factory OEM one. The new Kenwood did not have inputs for the dimmer or the illumination wires, so I left thoes two taped off. The radio itself works great, but when I turn my headlights on there is no dash lights and the dome light comes on at half wattage. I'm sure the problem is with the two wires I left taped off, and not connected to anything, but what do I connect them to?

you should have a grey(dimmer) and a brown(illumination left over that are taped off. If you dont then you got one of these wires mixed up in your wiring job so when you key up it does some bonkers action to your factory set-up. Not using these 2 wires will not affect your regular car functions, but hooking them up wrong will. Thats the best i can figure for ya. Ive done many Older gm's and not using the dimmer and illumination wires did nothing negative to the car itself. I hope this helps.

OK I think I know what I did wrong when I first hooked things up, I had the stereo ground wire hooked to the brown dimmer wire. When I turned everything on there was a pop under the dash near the floor, but the stereo worked just fine. Latter that day I noticed the problem with the dash lights, found this site and downloaded the wiring Information and changed the ground over to the black ground wire. So I guess I poped something in the dash wireing, any idea what I might have fried?

I guess I'll climb under the dash and look for burnt wires. Maybe I'll get lucky and it will be a blown fuse.

yep, check all of our fuses. Doubt you will find any burnt wires...as that is what the fuse is for.

Thanks Mikvot and Wimpwimp, I got it fixed, it was one 20 amp fuse that had blown when I installed the stereo. Everything is working fine now.
