The ESN on my 8053 required me to program a "key" cd (one of my choice) and if the unit were to lose power i.e. be stolen, it will not function with out the key cd. If you can prove that you are the owner to Eclipse (once you accquire the unit you will call them and give them info) they can walk you through a decoding sequence.

I don't use the ESN feature, as I have an alarm and if my battery should ever die I don't want to have to deal with locating my key CD.

ESN works on multiple levels. First is a burned in electronic serial number that cannot be modified, deleted, scratched out etc. It is always there. Second and more important is the security of the cd player. Once engaged, it cannot be broken. There is no voodoo science to get around it regardless of what is claimed. It can however, be reset by the user at any time if they know their "key cd" or by taking the unit in to any authorized Eclipse dealer.

To be reset at a dealer, you must prove to be the lawful owner of the unit. Eclipse will not provide the rotating unlock code to any dealer if the unit is deemed stolen or the information provided by the customer is inaccurate.

How the system works is simple. Upon activating ESN, it prompts you to insert a CD. This CD is the "Key CD" and should be a disc unique to the customer. The cd player reads track 00, the table of contents and burns it into memory. Then the unit spits the disc out and you can go about your business.

If the unit has power interrupted to it, dead battery, reinstall etc. , the unit will prompt upon power up to insert SEC disc. This will give you 5 chances to insert the "Key CD" as known only to the customer. If it matches, the unit unlocks and you can use the unit. If it does not match after 5 tries, the units locks up, lists the serial # and call 800, the prompt for you to call Eclipse or a authorized dealer to unlock the unit.

The unit once locked is 100% useless if stolen. No am/fm, nothing, just SEC or CALL 800. It works, it works extremely well and I highly recommend it.

Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.

I believe as forbidden said, you use a CD that YOU have personally. Preferably one that you burned. It will read the track 00 and use that information as the unlock "code" if you will. They do not provide the CD for you. You can use any that you like, data, music, whatever.

I thought you were not supposed to use a burned cd and were suppose to use a regular store bought cd for this purpose? Either way, if you use this feature, make sure you put that cd in a safe place so it doesn't get lost or damaged!

Thinking of selling? An Eclipse deck I assume. Anyways, the feature has to be enabled, and if it is, just disable it.

That may be my bad on assuming you could use a burned CD...though that would make it even better for security sake.

You can use any cd with a audio file on it. This is provided the unit supports the format. If you have a older Eclipse that is not MP3 capable, your burned disc will not register. The new units you can indeed use a burned cd but here is why you should not. You want the KEY CD to be a cd that you will never listen to nor leave in the car. If you do, chances are that the theif is going to steal both the cd player and the KEY CD. Leave the KEY CD at home where you will never lose it. Now, what happens if you are on a road trip and say the battery dies on you in the middle of nowhere (up doodie Creek for example), if you used a burned cd, there is not much of a hope that you can reburn a identical cd by memory. If  you use a store bought cd, one that you will never listen to (like Velocity Motors and his favorite Back Door Boys cd), it is easy for you to go into a store and purchase a identical cd and unlock your cd player. Choose a store bought cd that you will never ever listen to and make that the KEY CD.
