why negative ground?

why do automobile's use a negative "ground" versus using a positive?

Some manufacturers have used been both in the past.  Neg. ground simply became the industry standard because that's what most designers used.

Maybe from the shear fact most people don't know about electricity and most peolpe would assume ground = earth = safe.
