how to set up my amps

I am not too sure how to set up the gain etc on my amps for my speakers. So can anyone give me some advice on what Gain is and how to set it up etc.

First you turn all the gains down, then you put a good quality CD in your HU. Now you turn up your HU volume until you hear distortion in the speakers. When you here this the HU starts to clip the signal, now turn the volume down until it goes away. Now you can start turn the gain up on the amps. Just do the same procedure here as with the HU, turn the gain up until the speakers begin to distort, then back down until it goes away.

This is one way to do it, you can also use an osciloscope to set the gains, but not everyone has one of these.
