I would liketo find out what happens when you unplug the factory radio in the grand am and the alero I have did a remote start on these and it is a pain to have it hang there2002 gm radio -- posted image.

You loose your theft code, but that should be all. You will need the theftcode for the radio to reset it. I did a 2001 Alerao and I took out the entire radio but I had the theftcode handy and I just re-entered the numbers and all was fine.

look at the radio and see if the theftlight is flashing, if it is not then it is ok to unplug the radio if it is then you will need the code to turn it back on

Like zargon says, except he forgot to mention that the car's key must be switched off while observing the LED.
The Theftlock system must be activated by the customer---if the red LED is flashing with the car off, you'll need the code to turn the radio back on. Many people buy these cars used, and therefore don't even know the code---make sure to ask first.
I usually just leave the radio hanging, not only to save the customer's radio presets, but so I'll have tunes while I'm working.
If you do let the radio hang, it's wise to lay something soft between it and the car's dash, to prevent scratches.
