Just a quick question on my HU power wire. I want to run the power directly from my battery to the HU that way I can bypass the factory wiring. I have a 2000 Landrover Discovery which are notorious for wiring problems. I'm also giving it it's own ground to the battery. My question is the HU comes with a fuse built into the power wire coming from the back of it. If I run that to the battery would I be breaking the rule of having the fuses within 18" of the battery? Should I take that fuse and cut and splice and put it close to the battery? Also since it's getting it's own power and ground would it be advisable to give it it's own 12v switched too. If so what would be the best way to go about that? Thanks in advance....

1: The power wire to the battery is OK, but I'd recommend AGAINST the ground wire directly to the battery. Ground to the chassis.
2: You ALWAYS fuse ANY power wire, within 18 inches of the battery for that wire's safe current rating. ALWAYS. The underhood fuse is not for protecting the equipment. Leave the OEM fuse where it is, and supply an additional fuse holder for the underhood wire.
3: Since the accessory lead is effectively the same as a remote wire, you won't have any problem running from the accessory position in the fuseblock or the behind-dash location. VERY little current being pulled for that lead.
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."
