amp cuts out

Hey ya'll. Lets see what I get from this one. I was driving a 94 Ford Explorer with a Kenwood head unit, Kenwood crossover, Kenwood 729s 600 watt amp pushing two Toby 10's. The damn thing hit so hard I couldnt crank it all the way without sneezing. I loved it!! So then I bought a 98 Ford Expedition and wired everything from my Explorer into the Expedition exactly the same way. Now I dont get the bass I had before and my amp cuts out when I try to crank it. The amp gets hot quickly also. I figure my bass problem could be due to the larger cargo area but I cant figure out why the amp cuts out.It comes back on as soon as I turn the volume back down. Any ideas?

Check your grounding! It could be one reason, your amp won't get enough "juice"... Jussi

I hooked up the multimeter and Im running about 13.8 volts and when the amp cuts out, it jumps to 14.1 volts. Im using 4 gauge power and ground wire. I was wondering about the ground but my multimeter is saying its ok.

OK, it's not the grounding... are you sure, that everything is installed as it was in your previous ride? JussiInstaller/Owner

Double check the wiring from the subs to the amp as you may have inadvertently bridged the subs.  Also, do you happen to have a cap installed?  And finally, does it start to distort before it cuts out, or does it just sound normal prior to the cutting out?

Where is your amp mounted to? It sounds like it is thermalling(getting to hot and shuts itself off, you might want to think about a fan if there is no circulation where you mounted the amp). As for the bass check the phase of the subs. Make sure the positive is to the positive and negative is to the negative, not only from the amp to the box but inside the box as well, if phase was reversed there would still be bass just no where near as much. I would also take a meter to the subs to make sure that one of them is not blown.Certified Security Specialist

I've been sick lately, sorry I won't be on much.

The amp doesnt completly shut off, just the bass shuts off for a second, then comes back on. I know the subs are good. It doesnt distort any. I have the amp mounted on a rack in the open so there shouldnt be any reason for overheating. I'll check the phase on the head unit to see if its reversed. Personnaly, I think the amp is crapping out on me. Thanks, mack

Hey Mack6820, What kind of Toby's subs are you running? I've heard the Ranger setup in the 4th order bandpass, and I have to say those were the loudest sounding pair of ten(s) I've ever heard.
