Installing a toggle.

A few years ago I had a friend hook up a toggle switch so i could turn my amp on and off thus controlling when I wanted my subwoofers on. I didn't notice how he did it. Any help would be appreciate on how I do this. Thanks.

P.S.  I have a cd player that is hooked up to the amp now that pushes 2 15" speakers. However Like I said I don't want them on all the time. Thanks again.

Also the ground wire coming from the head unit I have running to the ground of the amp. Is this incorrect? I thought the ground from amp was suppose to go from amp to the car frame. However it seems to work fine. Any ideas?

One more thing Installing a toggle. -- posted image. When ever I start to turn the gain up on the amp, the sub goes nuts, it hits random notes really loudly and doesn't go with the music. Is the amp broken or is it just a wiring problem? Thanks.

I almost dont know where to begin in answering your questions...

1. To wire a switch to turn the amp on and off, go buy a on-off switch or toggle switch from radio shack, find a spot on your remote turn on lead that is near a convinient place to mount your switch, cut the remote turn on lead, wire the switch in series with it (H.U. side of remote wire goes to one side of switch, and the amp side of remote wire goes to other side of switch), this will interrupt the circuit from your H.U. to your amp and therefore shut it off.

2. I dont know why you did this but I would think it would be a really really bad idea, connect the ground of your H.U. to either the factory ground wire in the back of the dash, or crimp on a spade connect and screw it into the body of your car, do the same with the amp, if you dont have the connector you can get one anywhere, just crimp it on nice and tight, clean all paint off the part of the body (make sure its metal) and bolt it down.

3. The gain should do that to an extent, I dont know if you mean they are acting worse than they should but you do need to properly set your gains, turn the gain on your amp down all of the way, turn up the volume on your H.U. until you start to hear the speakers distort (clip) and turn the volume back by 1 or 2 until they sound good again, leave it at that volume and go back to your amp, slowly turn the gain up until you hear your subs start to distort (clip) and then turn your gain back down a notch until they sound ok, your gains are now set properly, the volume that you have it at on the deck should now be the max volume that you ever turn it to, if your subs arent as loud as you expected I suggest making sure that you have a good sub to amp matchup and then check enclosure for volume and leaks.
