I'm about to be getting a router, and since i've heard you basically have to have a plunge and a fixed, i found these two that are a 2 in 1.  Has anyone used/own either of these?  I'm leaning toward the craftsman, just because they usually have extra comfort/helpful built on accessories.  let me know what ya'll think.  Also this will be the first time using a router, so does anyone have a link for basic operations?  I'm sure i can figure it all out, but just so i don't have any minor mis-haps at first.  thanks

O yea, and how useful/necessary is a router table?  does it make jobs much easier, or jus more conveinent?

both are good routers and for the price they are worth it., I generally use a stronger router fixed in a table but it will be ok for you to use.

mecp certification is not always needed. I have it and it has not helped me out at all. my experience out shines it.

I use this one without a table. Its very light and small but powerful and can plunge a whole 3/4 speaker ring without a prob (thickest i have used it for).

The "Craftsman" you illustrate is really a Bosch.  It is normally rated higher than the DeWalt.  The other highly rated combo kit is the newer Porter Cable 89x series.  The PC has above the table height adjustment when mounted in a router table.  The older 69x series PC routers are good buys.  I have two.  You can often find a combo kit of the older PC for around $150.  For $200 I would buy the Bosch/Craftsman.  If I could buy the 69x PC significantly less I would get that.  It is the standard work-horse with more accessories available than any other router.

Sweet, I actually went ahead and got the Craftsman one.  I havn't gotten around to using it too much yet (still learning!) but i cut out my first set of rings today and performed great!  I do have one question though... If the rings i'm making are 6''in diameter on the inside cut and 7-4/16'' in diameter on the outside cut, do i need to adjust the diameter more on just the outside cut  for the 2/16'' radius on the 1/4'' straight bit? do i need to do this or not?  Im usuing a Jasper JIg circle cutter (the deluxe one), does this make any sense?  It's kinda hard for me to explain having no prior knowledge w/ woodworking really, atleast what i'm doing it with.

thanks
